Preverbal modifiers

Header division

Preverbs are a distributionally defined category in Qohenje, consisting of lexemes in their ATT form (see Attributives) that occur between a verbal auxiliary and its verbal lexeme. In this class we find words that correspond in function to English adverbs and epistemic modal verbs.

Adverbs

Sense permitting, any lexeme can be used by placing the ATT stem between the AUX and the verbal lexeme, in a function more normally considered "adverbial".

E.g., from the (NOR) lexeme , we take the ATT form () and place it between the AUX and the full verbal lexeme:

Note the absence of a cejhan between the ATT form and the verbal lexeme.

Adverbs may be chained in this position around the conjunction although it is rare to see more than two in a row.

The adverbial gloss of a lexeme will be roughly "in a manner exhibiting X", where (X is ABS), and "like an X" or "in an X-like manner" (where X is AN/IN)
