Nominal use of Lexemes - Introduction

Core semantics of Qohenje nominals

Unmarked lexemes are interpreted as profiling nominal concepts — that is, bounded regions in conceptual domains of some kind. Hence, without further information, the lexeme is taken to mean “(the) (mature, normal, etc.) tree(s)”, and the lexeme is taken to mean “(the) fight (currently in progress)”. Qohenje lexemes are by default definite (see Definiteness).

Nominals in Qohenje do not show a count/mass distinction. The default unspecified reading for a Qohenje noun is either mass or plural (if the lexeme is naturally countable). Context is usually sufficient to determine the appropriate count/mass specification of a nominal referent, if doing so is deemed important. Alternatively, one of four enumerative prefixes ( , see also Morphology) may be employed to fully specify the number intended:

These prefixes are comparatively infrequent, however, context usually being sufficient.

Orientation

The section on Nominals contains the following sub-sections , best read in the order presented...

Case
Qohenje cases are fully semantic in nature, and do not serve to mark grammatical roles (these are determined by word order and other morphological marks)
Definiteness
Qohenje nominal lexemes are by default definite, mass/plural. The language has a non-local morphological mark to indicate an indefinite Landmark (direct object).
Nominal qualification
The various methods of qualifying nouns in English (adjectives, participles, relative clauses etc) all fall into the same structural category in Qohenje.
